Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes

Blood sugar higher than the healthy range, on a spectrum from prediabetes to diabetes.

What it is

With prediabetes, blood sugar is above normal but below the diabetes range — and it is often reversible. Type 2 diabetes means the body cannot keep blood sugar in range without support.

Common signs
  • Often no symptoms early on
  • Increased thirst or urination
  • Tiredness
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow-healing cuts or frequent infections
What care may look like

Diagnosis uses blood tests such as A1c or fasting glucose. Care includes eating pattern, activity, sleep, weight support where appropriate, monitoring, and medication when needed. We also check eyes, kidneys, feet and cholesterol regularly.

What you can do now
  • Build meals around protein, vegetables and fibre
  • Walk after meals when you can
  • Keep a steady meal rhythm
  • Check feet daily for sores
  • Attend eye and kidney checks
