Bipolar disorder

Mood that shifts between low periods and unusually high or energised periods.

What it is

Bipolar disorder involves episodes of depression alongside periods of elevated mood or energy. With steady treatment, many people live full, stable lives.

Common signs
  • Periods of much less need for sleep with high energy
  • Faster speech or racing thoughts
  • Risky spending, driving or decisions
  • Episodes of deep low mood and hopelessness
  • Big changes in activity level between periods
What care may look like

Care starts with a careful history, ideally including someone who knows you well, and checks for other causes such as thyroid problems or substance effects. Ongoing care usually includes mood tracking, sleep protection, therapy and medication managed closely with your clinician, with regular review.

What you can do now
  • Keep sleep and wake times steady — sleep loss can trigger episodes
  • Track mood and sleep in a simple log
  • Agree a plan in advance with someone you trust
  • Avoid alcohol and recreational drugs
  • Bring a list of all medicines to every visit
